We still have some summer to go so we don’t want to rush things, but fall is, well, inevitable. And it’s also such a beautiful time of the year for photos, especially in Erie, PA along our uniquely beautiful lake. From the New York to the Ohio border, there are just too many options to count for fall photo shoot fun. (Check out this list.)

With cameras right inside our phones that we carry absolutely everywhere, it can seem like we’re always capturing memories. But a lot of those photos are eventually cleaned away or aren’t that great or are just of random stuff. And even the photos of our loved ones often don’t include the photographer or are too “selfie” to really be the kind of thing we want to have for remembering later.

In that context, it can be hard to remember that there’s this other option: occasional professional photo shoots like we do here at Matt Mead Portraits.

It can be hard, also, to decide on frequency and time of the year.

Here’s our suggestion: schedule a portrait session once a year and rotate through the seasons over four years.

Themes for fall photo shoot fun

Whether you have little kids or older kids or you’re thinking multi-generational, there are some things that never go out of style. Regardless of age, these themes will bring out the laughter and playfulness and that’s the best thing for photo shoots.

Pumpkin farms

This might seem obvious (and yes, it is) but it’s a classic for a reason. Of course, we don’t mean for you to go this far. ((laughing)) But there’s still plenty of fun options without going over that particular edge. You could get in some great action shots if you do a pumpkin carving or a pumpkin painting activity.

Apple picking

Apple picking and eating (don’t eat too many! belly aches!) is not just about apples. There’s cider and apple cider donuts ((mmm… donuts)). There are apple bushels and apple pies… all things apple! On a beautiful fall day, there’s nothing quite like an apple orchard and there is usually a picturesque barn or two and some animals to pet and feed.

Corn maze

Unless this triggers some fears due to certain seasonal movies, this can be a blast. There’s often an area with large interactive toys and bounce house. Though the maze itself is a perfect playground for the family.

Leaf fight

There are so many small parks in Erie with plenty of trees to supply the piles for this. Or you could hit up Frontier Park or even the Gorge. And the pictures can start with the creation of the pile and head right into the fun destruction. (And remember, all of these fun fall photo shoots are great for including your dog too!)

Lake and stream play

This seems like it should be first on this list but we wanted the dramatic build ((kidding)). And as we said, the beautiful water spots in Erie are for real uncountable. And we bet, even as you are reading this, you are having favorites pop into your head. Who in Erie doesn’t have a favorite beach? Who in Erie doesn’t have a favorite stream or creek? This would be a great photo shoot for everyone to have on colorful and fun rain boots.

Trick or treat

You don’t have to wait for Halloween for this one. You could thematically dress up and head outside any time. And what a great additional excuse to get together and eat your favorite candies?

Outdoor thanksgiving

This doesn’t have to be complicated. Picnic blankets and the fall make for great photos. Why not include some pumpkin pie?

Day of the dead celebration

Traditional day of the dead celebrations take place in cemeteries, which might not be everyone’s idea of a fun fall photo shoot, but it definitely will be for some. And traditionally, you would gather at loved ones’ graves with candles and decorations and sweet treats and take the time to celebrate family and ancestors.

Outdoor fire

Find your favorite fire pit and get the marshmallows ready. Maybe plan this for a full moon night to get the best lighting.

And a side note: in general, the lighting in the fall is some of the best all year.

General tips

• There are no hard and fast rules about what color is best for this shoot, but do pick a theme. And we don’t mean everyone should wear the same color or two but rather think along the lines of “neutrals” or “jewel tones.” And then have everyone pick colors based on that.
• When picking colors, think about the time of day and the place itself. Don’t blend in too much.
• Also consider the location when you’re thinking about shoes. Wearing dress shoes to a pumpkin patch is probably not a great idea.
• The fall can still be rather warm, so if you’re really into the idea of chunky sweaters wait until a bit later into fall to schedule.
• Keep in mind that this sort of photo shoot is active so don’t book it if you’re looking for more formal portraits.
• With that said, this is an opportunity to let the kids really be kids. Let them be, kinda, the leaders of the day.
• And let the kids bring out your own inner kid. Play along. Be in the moment with them.
